If laying ceramic tiles is totally new to you, “5 Steps to complete a successful ceramic tile installation” is a set of basic but important tips that you will help you avoid making costly mistakes on your next bathroom or ceramic tile installation.

o Plan which Tile

o Shop around if you want to save

o Prepare the surface for a long lasting job

o Lay the tiles

o Finishing touches

Plan which Tile

This step is often underestimated and sometimes even forgotten (can you believe it?). Planning your ceramic tile installation from A to Z is probably one of the most important steps for a smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

Some things to take in account are:

o Suitability of the tile

o Pattern /colour of the tile

o Size of the tile

o Size of the area to be tiled. (This is important data that will be vital to know how much tile, grout, etc, you have to buy)

o Adhesive, mortar or grout to suit your needs

Not all ceramic tile installations are the same, different tiling installations may require different mortar or grout. DO NOT feel shy about asking the suppliers for advice or help in calculating how much you need. They will gladly help you, as they are likely to make a sale.

Shop around if you want to save!

This isn’t as difficult as the first step, however when the budget is tight it can be tricky to find the right tile for the ceramic tile installation you want. You are going to have to make some compromises and so don’t get carried away by the beauty of some of the ceramic tiles. Prices can vary a lot between different tiles, so some end up rather expensive for only a few square metres.

Always shop around, it has never been easier. Just sit in front of the computer and use the Internet. Use local directories to find the suppliers close to you and pay them a visit.

Before making your final decision always check the chosen tile under different lights as the results can be surprisingly different.

Prepare the surface for a long lasting job before laying the ceramic tiles
The surface to be tiled (floor, wall or any other) will often need to be prepared, this can include work like filling, levelling, smoothing, priming and sometimes water proofing.

The right preparation will be directly affect the lifespan of the ceramic tile installation. Unless you want to be tiling again soon, you want to get this right from the start.

This is probably the most important point to ensure a long lasting tiling job. Don’t rush it.

Laying the ceramic tiles safely

The technique of laying ceramic tiles is not especially difficult. It only takes a little bit of practice before anyone can easily master it. Clearing the room to be tiled before starting will help you to do the job safer and easier. Don’t forget to wear your safety goggles when cutting or chipping tiles.

Laying ceramic tiles can also be a bit messy, if you don’t want dust all over the house we suggest sealing the room you want to tile whenever possible. A large piece of plastic tacked to the door frame will do the job quite well.

Try not to allow any adhesive to get on your skin and never forget to read the manufacturers directions before even opening the tin. If some ends up on you, just clean it with water as soon as possible. Even though tile adhesives aren’t usually abrasive, if you leave it for some time it may cause an allergic reaction.

Use a spirit level to help you with the depth & level of the tiles and spacers to maintain an even distance between them.

The finishing touches

Once the tile adhesive or mortar has cured (dried) and the tiles are firm and even, you can start with the finishing touches.

You’ll have to fill the spaces between tiles with grout making sure you don’t leave any gaps as these cause damp problems, in a shower for example.
The technique is very simple, use a rubber faced trowel to spread the grout and a cotton cloth to clean the excess grout from the tiles afterwards.
There are many different types of grouts; you’ll have to choose the right one depending on the surface and chosen tile.

Now that you have your ceramic tiles laid down, you only need to take care of them, usually manufacturers provide information on taking care of their tiles and only minimal effort is required. Most household cleaning products will do the job well, if some particular stain is stubborn, there are many commercial stain removers, just make sure you use the right product for the right tile.

You are now closer to discovering how satisfying it can be handling a tile installation yourself, just follow these 5 steps to get the best result.

Bathroom ceramic tile is often used in five different applications. This article discusses each application and some choices you can make.

Bathroom ceramic tile in your home is both beautiful and very practical. Nothing else can match the beauty and the great variety of colors, textures, designs and shapes possible with tile construction. Especially in bathrooms, ceramic tile can’t be matched as a durable and useful surface.

Tile On Counter Tops

Tile bathroom counter tops are very practical. Many times porcelain tile is used on counter tops. Porcelain tile is tile that is fired under certain conditions. The surface or finish of porcelain tile is very slick and glass-like. Because of that slick finish, porcelain tile wipes off very easily, which is great for clean-up in a bathroom. Porcelain tile comes in many types of trim shapes, suitable for trimming edges and trays in bathrooms.

But other kinds of tiles are used on bathroom counter tops. Granite and marble tiles are good on counter tops. Even floor tiles are fine. Just think about how you will trim the tile around the edges.

An epoxy grout is great for bathroom counter tops. Epoxy grout is stain proof and waterproof, perfect for use anywhere in a bathroom.

Ceramic Tile on Bathroom Floors

Bathroom floors get wet, making ceramic tile a perfect floor covering choice. Make sure to select a tile with some texture so it won’t be slick. Installation goes under the commode edge. The commode must be removed to install the tile. This is a good time to replace the commode mounting hardware and seal. Again, epoxy grout is perfect for the floor grout since it’s waterproof.

Tile On Walls

Bathroom walls are a great place for tile. Especially in a steamy shower environment, The moisture will not bother the ceramic tile wall at all. A ceramic tile wall is virtually a no maintenance surface. And porcelain is ultra easy to clean.

Ceramic Tile On Tub And Shower Surrounds

Maintaining many kinds of tub surrounds is a constant battle. But not ceramic tile on the tub surround. Just a simple wipe down occasionally is all that’s required. Also built in trays and racks can be fitted to the ceramic tile tub surround to make it both beautiful and useful.

Ceramic Tile Showers

Ceramic tile showers can be installed quickly and at reasonable costs. The standard method of building ceramic tile showers includes building a masonry shower floor over a waterproof membrane, called a shower pan liner. The shower floor will last a long time with very little maintenance. The only real maintenance required is to keep the grout sealed to prevent deterioration of the grout.

Do It Yourself Bathroom Tile

It is very possible for a handy person to learn to do bathroom ceramic tile installation. There are just a few steps to the process and a few tools to acquire if you wish to do tile installation yourself.

There are some tricks to installing ceramic tile, but nothing that you can’t learn. Just like many other home improvement projects, a handy person can do a professional ceramic tile installation job. You may be slower than a pro, but your finished work can be just as good.
Bathroom ceramic tile is a good choice because of its durability, resistance to dampness and its ease of cleaning. Bathroom ceramic tile can range from inexpensive to very expensive, and it is a classic choice for a bathroom.

Ceramic tile is formed from clay, shale or porcelain, then fired at very high temperatures until it hardens. The higher the temperature and the more times the tile is fired, the harder and less porous the tile becomes. Tile for bathrooms comes in many shapes, sizes, patterns and textures. Tile shapes can be squares, rectangles, hexagons and octagons. Accent tiles are narrow-shaped and diamond-shaped pieces.

Tile can be glazed or unglazed. Unglazed bathroom ceramic tile is simply baked pieces of clay whose colors are determined by the mineral content of the clay. These tiles are the workhorses of the industry. Generally thicker and denser than glazed tiles, they include products such as quarry tiles and porcelains. The toughness of unglazed tiles make them ideally suited (but not limited to) heavy commercial installations.

Here are tips for using ceramic tile in a bathroom:

1. Consider using unglazed bathroom ceramic tile if you want to have the most slip-resistant surface. The rugged surface texture and matte finish of these tiles give them good slip-resistant qualities for use in wet areas. If you buy and install unglazed tiles for your bathroom floor, they will need to be cleaned frequently because they absorb oil and stains quite easily. Examples of unglazed tiles are quarry tiles, porcelain tiles and terra-cotta tiles which can be handmade or machine-made.

2. If you are using a white or cream ceramic tile for your bathroom, using a different color grout like “blue” will give your bathroom a more dramatic look.

3. Make sure you apply sealers to grout lines in areas of heavy wear, like countertops. Sealers will protect and preserve grout colors.

4. For a floor surface that is virtually stainproof, use glazed bathroom ceramic tile. Glazed bathroom ceramic tile is made the same way as unglazed tile, but it undergoes an additional process. A glass layer is applied, then subjected to tremendous heat in a kiln. This process liquefies the glass and fuses it to the bisque. Glazes offer an unlimited array of beautiful colors, textures and designs and create a surface that is practically stainproof and very wearable. While most glazed tiles are for light residential to medium commercial traffic uses, recent technological advances produce glazed tiles that are hard and durable enough to stand up to the most demanding commercial applications.

5. To make your bathroom floor more exciting, add patterns, floor accents or small splashes of color using ceramic custom tile pieces. Or consider using large rectangular decorative sections placed in the middle of the floor. Custom ceramic tile or art tile can be found with Victorian, Mexican or Moorish styled designs and they can also be used as bathroom backsplashes, tub surrounds and in showers.

6. For countertops and backsplashes, make sure the tiles are glazed and can withstand household cleaners. And backsplashes are a great place to add decorative tile.

7. To tie it all together, pay attention to the available bathroom accessories. Towel bars, ceramic soap dishes, toothbrush/cup holders — you’ll want these to blend in well with your bathroom ceramic tile.

With all the choices that await you today, have fun as you select the styles, colors, patterns and sizes of bathroom ceramic tile and related details for your bathroom. You’ll want your bathroom to be a fun, cozy room to spend time in, and bathroom ceramic tile can help create that kind of atmosphere. Bathroom ceramic tile is decorative and lasting — use it in the ways you want for having the bathroom that you can enjoy every day.

It’s not that difficult to customize and install ceramic wall tile in your bathroom. A little patience and dedication will get you a long way when installing that dream ceramic tile bathroom wall you’ve always wanted to have.

Before you begin to install ceramic wall tile, get your tiling tools together. You will need the following tools for this project: A tape measure, a tile cutter and a pair of tile nippers and a pair of pliers, tile spacers, sandpaper, a trowel (preferably notched) and a rubber grout float. To install ceramic wall tile on your bathroom walls properly, you will also need a strong setting material like tiling thinset mortar, or any of a wide selection of tile adhesives. You will also need tiling grout for filling in the gaps between your tiles. Make sure to match your setting material color with your grout.

A bucket, rags and sponges will also be needed for cleaning your tiles of excess grout and other debris, after you’re all done. And don’t start to install ceramic wall tile without these essentials: You will also need a pair of safety glasses, heavy leather gloves, and long-sleeved work clothes (broken shards, and other debris can cause nasty cuts, if you are not careful). Ready to start on your dream ceramic bathroom wall? Follow the tiling instructions below and make your ceramic tiled bathroom wall and start tiling!

You can begin by finding the center of your wall. Use a carpenter’s level, or long pieces of plumb to mark intersecting vertical and horizontal lines. These will be your reference lines for your tiling work. Where both lines intersect is the starting point for your first row of ceramic tiles. From that point, you may then be able to working your way to both ends of your bathroom wall. Make regular checks when you install ceramic wall tile, so that your tiling work is consistent and does run up or down in a slanting direction.

There are two types of bathroom walls you may be working on. One is the common concrete wall, and the other is a special type of called a green drywall. A green drywall is specifically designed for use in bathrooms and showers because it is designed to resist moisture intrusion. Be sure that you clean your walls of dust and debris, as well as repair cracks and fill in gaps and holes. Roughen up or scarify your wall so that your tiling mortar has some grip for bonding. That way, when you begin to install ceramic wall tile on your walls, you won’t have a problem with your tiling mortar or bonding material.

You may now start installing ceramic wall tile once the walls are laid out. Start at your reference lines’ intersection point. Apply a coat of tiling thinset mortar. Place your tile over it and press the tile down firmly in place. Give it a twisting motion to set it in place. Stop pressing when you feel your tile has set and is no longer wobbly. Duplicate this procedure with the rest of your ceramic tiles. To get a consistent tiling, place tile spacers on all the spaces between your ceramic bathroom tiles. Don’t forget to check your work every now and then.

You may not need to use the entire tile as you finish up the end of the row. Use a tile cutter to get your tile under the right size. Then, smoothen the cut edge with sandpaper. Be careful: The edge of a cut ceramic bathroom tile is very sharp. For irregular, use your tile nippers. First draw an outline of the irregular and etch a line along it. Then, use your tile nipper to break off the unuseable edges, until you have required shape. Do this a little at a time, so you can control your tile nipping. Don’t forget to sand the edges over.

Once you’re done tiling the bathroom wall, leave it to set, overnight, at the very least, or twenty-four hours, at the most. After this setting period, it’s time to lay in your grout. There are two main kinds of grout: Sanded or unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a mixture of cement, water and fine sand. Unsanded grout is any of a wide selection of polymer-based and epoxy resin adhesive grout used to install ceramic wall tile. If your tile spaces are more than an eighth of an inch wide, use sanded grout. For smaller tile spaces, use unsanded grout. Start by map out your bathroom wall and work one section at a time. To maximize your grout application, angle your rubber grout float and press down firmly as you spread it over the tile spaces. Check for pockets of air. Dab these spaces with more grout lining by using the edges of your grout float. Use a damp sponge to wipe off any excess grout. Rinse your sponge regularly so you can get a cleaner and better finish. Let your grout dry for a day and then take a dry piece of cloth and clean and buff your tiles.

Before you know it, you’re done! Follow these instruction on how install ceramic wall tile, and don’t forget that ceramic tiling takes some dedication and patience. Take your time and don’t rush your work. When you install ceramic wall tile, the key is consistency and patience. Ceramic tiles that have been rushed will ruin your bathroom’s overall look. A bathroom wall with ceramic tiles that run in haphazard inconsistent zigzag lines is not a beautiful thing to look at. And worse, it would only mean that you lack enthusiasm for what you’re doing and that you haven’t given it your effort.

You don’t have to be a master tilist to install ceramic wall tile in your house. All you have is the best ceramic tile installation instructions.

A budget is usually a consideration when installing ceramic tiles yourself.

A reason that many people become DoItYourselfer’s is to reduce the cost of ceramic tile installation.

Make a list with all the Tiles and accessories you require for your bathroom tile installation. Put them in a table of items with the various places where they are available, the quality of material and the price you have to pay for it. This way you have all the information together and can easily compare before you decide where you’re going to buy your ceramic tiles and accessories.

You’ll probably need to consider such things as; ceramic tiles, ceramic soap holders, ceramic toilet paper roll holders, ceramic bathrobe hooks, ceramic towel hangers, ceramic shelves etc. You don’t need all the accessories to be ceramic but they look nice when combined tastefully.

You should decide the overall color scheme: There are a huge variety of colored ceramic tiles and accessories on the market as well as different themes to combine with the colors

The Internet has given a new meaning to window-shopping for a ceramic tile installation. You can see the hundred of ceramic tiles, compare the prices and find the ones that suit your ceramic tile installation best. However, you should only use it as an information tool. You need to see your ceramic tiles with your own eyes before deciding which ones you want in your bathroom.

When you visit a dealer, you want to be able to get the feel of tiles and other accessories. It’s worthwhile viewing the ceramic tiles and accessories in natural light and artificial light such as tube lighting. Some tiles and accessories may look different in natural light than when under artificial light.

If you don’t have any idea what the bathroom tile installation will look like when completed, you should go through the manufacturer’s catalogue for some ideas and help.

When choosing the product, take your time shopping around to compare the alternatives available. Very often you’ll see something you like but soon find something better so don’t worry about changing your mind, just remember it’ll be worth the effort when you see your new bathroom tile installation finished just to your taste.

If you are still not satisfied then some manufacturers may be able to make a special design customised for you. However that can be rather expensive.

The bathroom size and the size of the tiles should be carefully considered as they are closely linked. The size of ceramic tile and the design of the tile make a big impact on the finish to the bathroom ceramic tile installation. Did you realise that in small bathrooms big tiles and large designs make your bathroom look even smaller so smaller tiles are more suitable?

One consideration for floor tiling may be slip resistance or polished finishes.

A certain percentage of extra tiles are always required beyond your ceramic tile installation requirements. This is due to breakages, wastages, and damage in other ways. You should order a minimum of an extra 1 % of plain tiles and 2 or 3 extra pieces for future replacement. This is important as tile manufacturing is a batch process and there are minor variations from batch to batch so it’ll be impossible to get matching tiles from the same manufacturer later.

Complete Secure and Reliable ceramic tile installation.
