Among the most difficult household chores is cleaning ceramic tile. Ceramic tiles are mostly exposed to dust, and dirt easily builds on such materials. Maintaining ceramic tiles is a difficult job because the tiles are exposed to a large variety of contaminants. A homeowner should take care of his or her tiles, and his or her home, by cleaning ceramic tile frequently. Tiles are used for many different purposes, including as flooring, on walls and for decoration. Tiles used for decoration are some of the hardest to clean, because the paintings and designs may be damaged by some cleaning solutions. However, cleaning can be easy, if a few simple steps are followed, and it can even be fun, especially when the finished product is uncovered. Tools for cleaning ceramic tile are available in many stores and through numerous dealers. The tools and materials include warm water, ceramic tile cleaner, rags or micro-fiber mops and a bucket. Homeowners should try to avoid sponges, since sponges pull dirt from the grout tracks and make the job more difficult. Sponge mops are also counterproductive. Choosing a cleaning solution is important, as some detergents may damage the tiles. It is also recommended to use branded and user-friendly products. In the end, water is the homeowner’s friend, and should always be used first and foremost when cleaning tile. The first step in the cleaning process is to mix the cleaner solution with the water in the proper proportion. If the solution is not mixed in the proper proportion it may damage the ceramic tile. While cleaning decorative ceramic tiles, it is necessary to take extra care, because these ceramic tiles may have paint on them. Some solutions that are meant for cleaning ceramic tile may end up removing the paint from the tile. This is tricky, as the homeowner must read the labels carefully; just because a detergent is designed to clean tile does not mean it is designed to clean every type of tile. The next step is to clean the surface of the tile with a dry cloth to remove any dust. After clearing the tile of all of the dust that can be removed with the dry cloth, the homeowner should spray the water and cleaner solution on the tile. Once the tile is saturated with the solution, a mop should be used to clean it. It is recommended to wipe in a circular motion across the tile to avoid leaving any marks. Extra care, once again, should be used when cleaning decorated or painted tiles. A dry cloth should be used to dry the tiles that will not leave streaks. The tile can be rubbed and buffed until it shines, and the surface will be a little sticky and glossy. Cleaning ceramic tile can bring back the original look, feel and shine of the tile, making any room look like new, and making the house a better, more fun, more happy place to live in.

If laying ceramic tiles is totally new to you, “5 Steps to complete a successful ceramic tile installation” is a set of basic but important tips that you will help you avoid making costly mistakes on your next bathroom or ceramic tile installation.

o Plan which Tile

o Shop around if you want to save

o Prepare the surface for a long lasting job

o Lay the tiles

o Finishing touches

Plan which Tile

This step is often underestimated and sometimes even forgotten (can you believe it?). Planning your ceramic tile installation from A to Z is probably one of the most important steps for a smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

Some things to take in account are:

o Suitability of the tile

o Pattern /colour of the tile

o Size of the tile

o Size of the area to be tiled. (This is important data that will be vital to know how much tile, grout, etc, you have to buy)

o Adhesive, mortar or grout to suit your needs

Not all ceramic tile installations are the same, different tiling installations may require different mortar or grout. DO NOT feel shy about asking the suppliers for advice or help in calculating how much you need. They will gladly help you, as they are likely to make a sale.

Shop around if you want to save!

This isn’t as difficult as the first step, however when the budget is tight it can be tricky to find the right tile for the ceramic tile installation you want. You are going to have to make some compromises and so don’t get carried away by the beauty of some of the ceramic tiles. Prices can vary a lot between different tiles, so some end up rather expensive for only a few square metres.

Always shop around, it has never been easier. Just sit in front of the computer and use the Internet. Use local directories to find the suppliers close to you and pay them a visit.

Before making your final decision always check the chosen tile under different lights as the results can be surprisingly different.

Prepare the surface for a long lasting job before laying the ceramic tiles
The surface to be tiled (floor, wall or any other) will often need to be prepared, this can include work like filling, levelling, smoothing, priming and sometimes water proofing.

The right preparation will be directly affect the lifespan of the ceramic tile installation. Unless you want to be tiling again soon, you want to get this right from the start.

This is probably the most important point to ensure a long lasting tiling job. Don’t rush it.

Laying the ceramic tiles safely

The technique of laying ceramic tiles is not especially difficult. It only takes a little bit of practice before anyone can easily master it. Clearing the room to be tiled before starting will help you to do the job safer and easier. Don’t forget to wear your safety goggles when cutting or chipping tiles.

Laying ceramic tiles can also be a bit messy, if you don’t want dust all over the house we suggest sealing the room you want to tile whenever possible. A large piece of plastic tacked to the door frame will do the job quite well.

Try not to allow any adhesive to get on your skin and never forget to read the manufacturers directions before even opening the tin. If some ends up on you, just clean it with water as soon as possible. Even though tile adhesives aren’t usually abrasive, if you leave it for some time it may cause an allergic reaction.

Use a spirit level to help you with the depth & level of the tiles and spacers to maintain an even distance between them.

The finishing touches

Once the tile adhesive or mortar has cured (dried) and the tiles are firm and even, you can start with the finishing touches.

You’ll have to fill the spaces between tiles with grout making sure you don’t leave any gaps as these cause damp problems, in a shower for example.
The technique is very simple, use a rubber faced trowel to spread the grout and a cotton cloth to clean the excess grout from the tiles afterwards.
There are many different types of grouts; you’ll have to choose the right one depending on the surface and chosen tile.

Now that you have your ceramic tiles laid down, you only need to take care of them, usually manufacturers provide information on taking care of their tiles and only minimal effort is required. Most household cleaning products will do the job well, if some particular stain is stubborn, there are many commercial stain removers, just make sure you use the right product for the right tile.

You are now closer to discovering how satisfying it can be handling a tile installation yourself, just follow these 5 steps to get the best result.

The latest trend in kitchen counter tops or worktops, as they are also called, is to cover them in ceramic tiles. The ceramic tiles are the same ones that go on your floor or walls. individuals no longer care for the old MDF plastic coated worktops, pretty as they seemed to be until not so long ago. They are now so old-fashioned, darling! You simply must have a ceramic tile counter top in the kitchen.

There is such a broad assortment of ceramic tiles as well. There are thousands of styles of tiles in dozens of materials. There are stone, slate, ceramic and quarry tiles to name but a few of the materials used to make tiles. However, most individuals go for the ceramic tiles for their counter top, because there is more choice and they are not so expensive.

Some of the designs obtainable for a tiled counter top are plain, riven, patterned, mosaic, floral, rustic, country or artistic, but really, the world is your oyster when it comes to selecting ceramic tiles. They are also available in different sizes, but the most common are: 25 mm (one inch); 150 mm (six inches); 225 mm (nine inches) and 300 mm (one foot).

As you probably already know from your preceding experience with tiling the kitchen and bathroom, ceramic tiles are very versatile. They can be cut or snapped fairly easily, once you get the hang of it and they are easily bedded down although some tilers would rather one method and others another.

In Europe tiles are usually laid on lines of adhesive which have been laid down with an adhesive applicator. This technique uses approximately half the adhesive you would normally use. In Asia they tend to lay tiles on a full bed of cement. It does not matter which technique you use for walls or your counter top as the tiles will not be subject to any weight.

A ceramic tile counter top in the kitchen is an outstanding idea because there is lots of variety, they are simple to lay, hard-wearing and heat-resistant. It is a surprise that they did not catch on a long time ago.

Some individuals count the ceramic tiles above the work surface as part of the counter top although it is not really. It is part of the wall tiling. Anyway, choose your tiles carefully, because you will be seeing them often. A lot of people choose to have an off-white splashback with a number of picture tiles placed at random but with a panel of six or eight tiles making a fresco in the centre. A granite counter top cut neatly around your hob and sink looks great. This style works best if you have a built-in sink and cooker.

Black is too harsh for many, so they might pick a lighter, say, marbled tile. This looks great too. It is all a matter of getting the colours of the splashback and the counter top co-ordinated well, but it is not hard. You could also have a panel in the ceramic tile counter top. If you are stuck for ideas, just walk around a home improvement centre and look at their show kitchens. What they have in MDF, you can do in ceramic tiles.

Should they be Released Back into the Wild?

Ceramic garden pixies provoke one of two feelings; you either love them or you hate them, but one thing is for sure they are a source of fun for people all over the world.

Well, the funniest story I ever heard about ceramic garden pixies was this one that happened to my sister-in law. She had a sweet little garden pixie complete with a fishing rod which she set on the edge of a pond in her back garden. She loved it, even though her husband hated the thing and kept telling her to get rid of it because he thought it was embarrassing. Well, anyway, they kept arguing about it and in the end, her husband paid some local boys to steal it from the garden and get rid of it.

The boys took it away, and my sister-in-law was heartbroken, of course, but then a funny thing happened and she got a postcard in the mail from her missing pixie! It said that he was very well and that he had decided to take a trip around the world, because just sitting by the pond in her garden was boring! I’ll never forget the look of astonishment on her face when she read that first card. And through all of that year, she kept getting these postcards from all over the world and all signed, Pixie.

She was pretty annoyed that it had been stolen, but she couldn’t understand why anyone would be so crazy as to keep sending the postcards. We all thought it was hilarious, because what had happened was that one of the boys who had been paid to remove the pixie from the garden, had then gone off on a year long student trip around the world and he was sending the postcards for fun! When her husband finally confessed, she got her revenge by making him take her to the Garden Centre where she bought three more ceramic garden pixies and a ceramic garden stool.

A lot of people get pleasure from supporting the ‘human’ rights of garden pixies. For example, in Paris in 2005, there was a daring nighttime attack on an exhibition of antique ceramic garden pixies held in a museum. The ‘Pixie Liberation Front’ stole more than 20 of the pixies and later issued a statement demanding that all ceramic garden pixies should be liberated and released back into their natural habitat!

And in several parts of the world, police have had to be called in to solve cases of missing pixies. In Fairfax County, Washington D.C. a woman complained that her garden pixies were being stolen, one each night. The police installed a spy camera and filmed the thief in the act on four separate occasions. It turned out to be a Labrador retriever dog, which had been retrieving the ceramic garden pixies and taking them to his home!

And in Australia, the gardens of one specific residential area were totally cleared of garden pixies, which left the local police mystified. It wasn’t until several months later that the pixies were found in a bush clearing where they had been carefully set out around the largest one, as if having a meeting.

If you are a lover of ceramic garden pixies and you visit England, you absolutely must visit the Pixie and Gnome Reserve, set in some wonderful countryside in northern Devon. In a beautiful four acre reserve, there are more than a thousand gnomes and pixies made out of pottery, porcelain and ceramics. It’s very popular with children who always love anything to do with fairies, elves and pixies. Apparently, the owners just started with one or two around their large garden and in the small wood next to it and then every time they spotted a ceramic garden pixie they hadn’t got, they bought it and now they’ve got enough to populate a small village!

It’s clear that although to many people the ceramic garden pixie is an abomination, there are many others who find that their cheery presence brightens up our lives and adds a bit of fun to the gardens they inhabit.

Before beginning the work of installing the ceramic tile floor, assess the work area. What one is looking for is asbestos. If the work area was built during the 1970’s or earlier, the chances of asbestos being present is very high. Asbestos was used extensively in the construction trade until the late 1970’s. Asbestos is the chief cause of a form of lung cancer known as mesothelioma. When disturbed, its fibers get into the air which is breathed. Precautions need to be taken to insure one does not breathe those fibers.

Next, the foundation on which the ceramic tile is going to be put on needs to be assessed. There are certain foundations which are not suitable for ceramic tile flooring installation. They are cushioned vinyl flooring, any kind of particle boards, plywood, OSB (Oriented Strand Board), tongue and groove planking and hardwood floors. Concrete is a suitable foundation for ceramic tile flooring installation.

If the bathroom is in a foundation home, plywood may be the sub flooring and one will have no choice but to install the tile flooring on it. If that is the case, then the choice is to put a membrane between the ceramic tile and the plywood which will decrease the likelihood of moisture getting into the plywood.

After that membrane is applied and dried, use a latex thinset bonding material applied between the dried membrane and the tile.

Assuming it is the bathroom which is to be re-floored with the ceramic tile flooring, in addition to the above flooring which need to be treated, the trim molding, the toilet, and the toilet gasket will need removal. Remember to shut off the water before toilet removal and the wax gasket will need to be replaced. Installation of the toilet bowl is the reverse of removal.

They will add to the height of the floor, so any door thresholds will have to be removed and replaced later. The bathroom door may need to be trimmed to clear the new height of the floor.

If you are going to be covering vinyl flooring, have a piece of the vinyl flooring tested for asbestos. If it does not contain asbestos, it is recommended the vinyl is sanded to make the latex modified thinset bond easier to the vinyl. If the vinyl is asbestos refer to the pamphlet provided by the EPA titled “Asbestos in Your Home”.

Installing them directly to concrete, will require application of thinset and placing the ceramic tile on it. Assuming there is no paint or other treatment on the surface of the concrete. If the concrete floor does have paint on the surface, that will need to be removed or the surface roughed so the thinset will bond to the paint. If the floor surface is not perfectly level, you will need to use a concrete mix to level the work area before beginning to lay the ceramic tile flooring. If concrete was needed to level the surface, you will need to allow the concrete to cure 24 hours before applying the thinset.

Thinset dries pretty quickly, so once you begin to lay the ceramic tile you have to stay with it through to the end of the job or the thinset. Plan ahead and don’t mix so much thinset that it dries in the bucket before you use it.

The three most common floor surfaces one may want to cover with a ceramic tile are concrete, plywood and vinyl. The latter two are not recommended to be used as foundations for ceramic tile flooring installation, but can be used with proper steps taken to insure the thinset will bond the ceramic tile to the floor. One needs to remember about the dangers of asbestos in older homes. Other than that, the job is fairly straight forward.

Today there are a new option for people who wish to decorate their homes with ceramic floor tiles. And that is to have paint ceramic floor tiles that are painted to their liking. This is really a nice option for creative individuals, who can express them self this way, and paint their rooms this way. Also, it can allow you to break the monotony of the usual dark tones that most ceramic tiles are produced with, and paint ceramic floor tiles to vivid colors, which will enhance your enjoyment in the space where you place them.

These paint ceramic floor tiles are produced by painting them manually, by hand, to your liking. This can be done for you by people who specialized in that. You can try and look up for some of those tiles in stores that are specialized for ceramic tiles in general. Or you can try and get in touch with people who are making them through the Internet.

These paint ceramic floor tiles, that are painted by hand, often follow certain motives, like a field of flowers, or some other nature theme, or they can portray something totally different. The only thing that links all of these tiles is that they are original. Perhaps, you can even say they are a work of art. Of course, they are more expensive than usual tiles. Manual work necessary for creating them always come at a cost.

These paint ceramic floor tiles can take various positions on the floor where they are placed. They can just take the border tiles, but sometimes they can be placed in the middle of the floor, and form some sort of a mosaic there.

These paint ceramic floor tiles are usually created by coloring white glazed tiles with various paint.

To paint ceramic floor tiles one should probably have artistic talents, for as we mentioned, most people who are looking for these tiles are regarding them as certain works of art. Also, they really want to decorate their rooms with them, not just merely place tiles in them. These paint ceramic floor tiles can be used for decorating various rooms in ones home. They are, however, most often used in living rooms, children bedrooms, and recreational areas. And if you are a person looking to buy some of these tiles you too should have in mind that they are a work of art, and unique. Therefore you should not expect to get them whenever you want, as it is unlikely that the artist who created them will create a similar work.

Apart from the aesthetic reasons, these tiles should be considered for their other benefits like the fact that they are easy to maintain, simply due to the fact that they are ceramic tiles. Also, they are highly resistant to moist, and and various stains.

To conclude, if you want a functional, yet artistic addition to your home had painted ceramic tiles could just the thing for you.

The concept of ceramic or ceramic tile painting can be dated back thousands of years. As a matter of fact, they have been discovered at a number of most erstwhile ruins. The term “ceramic” is derived from a Greek word that means pottery. Nevertheless, ceramic art work has been used prior to the time of olden Greece.

Inception

As soon as human being started out constructing dwellings and civic facilities, he made up his mind to invigorate the space somewhat. Ceramic painting turned into an effective technique to embellish the interior of a house. It was employed on patio walls, roofs, floorings, inside murals and even on outside walls. This particular theme of beautification is so ancient that ceramic tile prints have been recovered at the remains of Babylon, prehistoric Egypt and Greece. The most antique artworks were obtained in Babylon and are reckoned to be 4,000 years old.

Evolution of Techniques

Hardly any practices were ever acknowledged all through the past record of ceramic painting. They were communicated by word of mouth from father to child or from master to pupil. It is apparent that the tiles themselves were manually constructed of clay. The most former tiles were built of clay bricks that were crushed and formed by hand. Subsequently, they were dried out by the sunlight or baked. Afterwards, tools made of wood were employed to give shape to the clay. After the physical structure was formed, the tile was blazed in a kiln. If the tile was not having a shiny coating, it was blazed only once. If it was glazed, then it was blazed two times in the furnace. In the period from 1840 to 1849, artists started to recreate the art on ceramic tiles and made bricks with a dust pressing technique. This technique involved squeezing the brick between two metal blocks.

Enhancing Techniques & Color

Tiles without shiny coating were left uncolored and continued with the shade of the clay. A very old method of adornment was sgraffito. Sgraffito is a practical method where the body is wrapped up with thin potter’s clay and then knocked off to shape a figure. A lucid glaze made by pounding white lead, flint (a form of silica), porcelain clay and china stone simultaneously revealed the coloring of the clay or of the paint used over the clay. This shiny finish permitted artists to paint freely on the clay and rendered the paint capable to remain on the clay. The early Greeks heavily contributed to a manner of ceramic painting known as mosaic. This technique implies cutting off painted tile pieces, then assembling them to make an image or design.

Forms of Decoration

Three forms of embellishment were applied on ceramic. The foremost form of design, used in olden periods, was the tile image. Every brick comprised a piece of an image, and then bricks were set up as one to create one big picture constituted of tiles. The bricks were normally dyed in color and shiny. Single motifs were said to be tiles with one separated design colored upon them. Ceramic was also found with paints of geometric figures.

Ceramic tile is made from natural materials that with heat were turned into a home improvement supply that emanates not only with that versatile appeal but with lasting durability as well. Fired at high temperatures, clay and a combination of minerals are turned into a hard substance that may be glazed or left untreated. When thinking of what to integrate into just any remodeling project, ceramic tile can do just great and can superbly complement with the renewed functionality and beauty of your New York home. So whether you are in Manhattan, Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn or Staten Island it pays to consider what this material has got to offer.

Ceramic tile makes up for a flexible choice in terms of design and function. Products come in a very wide variety of styles from stripes, geometric, floral, to delightfully complicated mosaics or just anything that could easily capture your imagination. It offers a good selection when it comes to sizes and shapes and so much more when it comes to color-coming in every color of the rainbow and almost all shades in between. Extraordinarily, it comes in various sets of qualities making it ideal to use as roofing, wall tile, countertop or decorative tilework material.

Other than versatility, ceramic tile also poses a whole lot of other benefits including:

* Resistance to abrasion. When choosing materials for your home improvement, one important factor to look into is its suitability for its intended application and the functions of the room. One good thing about ceramic tile is that it can serve its purposes efficiently whether for heavy, moderate or light use.

* Slip resistance. Generally, an unglazed ceramic tile holds better slip resistance than that of glazed ones, making them better choices for outdoor use. But today, both glazed and unglazed types are manufactured featuring abrasive grits on the surface.

* Hygiene. Where cleanliness is essential, ceramic tile can be integrated. Having characteristics of efficiently repelling fumes, liquids, odors, other unpleasant elements and practically all compounds that could result to stains. This choice promotes good hygiene and easy clean up.

* Longevity. With an eye for quality products and religiously sticking to proper maintenance, any area in your home laid with ceramic tile can last a lifetime and even more. Because of this, it is crucial that you choose products carefully- picking one that offers an appeal that you would not easily get tired of.

* Permanent colors. Unlike other materials, glazed ceramic tile can effectively serve its purposes whether it is put on the kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom and even public spaces that connect to the outdoors. No matter how much sunlight this is exposed to, the colors will stay as vivid.

* Water, Frost and Fire Proof. Especially if you are considering ceramic tile for outdoor use, choose varieties that have moisture absorption of less than 3%. This feature also makes up for greater resistance to frost which prevents tiles from freezing and cracking. Ceramic tiles are completely fire resistant. Though extreme heat can affect glaze color, this option gives your home added protection.

Ceramic tiles are made from clay dust pressed into moulds and baked at high temperatures. If you choose the option of laying ceramic floor tile, you will be using a tile that has been used for hundreds of years, since they are so durable and are capable of withstanding heavy use, they are waterproof and will not be affected by most household spillages. Many Victorian houses that have ceramic tiling look as good today as they did when they were laid. The main areas for laying ceramic floor tile are the hall, kitchen and bathroom.

Ceramic floor tiles are slightly thicker than wall tiles, they come in a variety of designs, shapes, colours and patterns, and are available either glazed or unglazed. As with any job preparation is key to getting it right, this is no different with laying ceramic floor tile. If you are laying ceramic floor tile over a concrete floor surface, you need to first repair and fill in any holes, clean any grease off the surface and sweep leaving the floor free of dust before applying a sealant.

When laying ceramic floor tiles you will need to use an adhesive recommended by the manufacturer of the tile, this will usually be a bituminous cement based or solvent based adhesive. A trowel or spreader to apply the adhesive, spacers and a tile cutter or saw. If tiling over floorboards screw loose floorboards to the joists and then cover with 12mm exterior grade plywood, make sure the screws are countersunk and then seal the plywood surface.

How many tiles will I need? you can work this out by using the tile size to find out how many tiles there are in a row, then add up the number of rows, count the tiles you will have to cut as a whole one and then allow another row for any broken tiles you might have.

The final part of your preparation when laying ceramic floor tiles is deciding which grout to use. Waterproof grout is available in many colours, and white is always a popular choice but bear in mind this tends to show up dirty marks easily. Now we are ready to start. The first thing I recommend before you start laying ceramic floor tile is that you plan your tile layout on paper, in an awkward shaped room your tiles should follow a main feature such as a run of kitchen units.

Ok now we can get down to the real business of laying ceramic floor tiles. Firstly we need to find a starting point, this can be done by snapping chalk lines from the centre of each wall across to the opposite wall, where these two lines cross will be the position of your key starting tile. Dry-lay the key tile and tiles to two walls, reposition these tiles along the chalk line to prevent the cut tiles at both ends being less than a third of the full size. Remove the tiles and fix guide battens along the chalk lines, then spread the adhesive within the area using a notched trowel.

Start laying ceramic floor tiles onto the adhesive using a twisting motion, then place spacers between tiles to keep gaps even, at this point only lay whole tiles. Remove any excess adhesive. Now we can move onto the other sections of the floor and repeat the process. When this has been completed it is usually best to leave it overnight to dry. Next using a heavy duty tile cutter, cut and lay the edge tiles. Finally we can now grout the floor using a rubber bladed spreader, pressing the grout into the gaps with a grouting tool, and then wiping off the excess with a wet cloth before it sets.
